Seven Wonders of Romania

Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyad or Hunedoara Castle, is a Gothic Renaissance castle located in the Transylvania area of the country.  Often considered the inspiration for Stoker’s castle for Dracula.

The Central University Library is located in Bucharest. It was founded in 1895 and the collection of literary work grew over 2 million books by 1970. Over 500,000 pieces were destroyed in a fire as part of the 1989 Romanian Revolution.

Bran Castle was constructed in the 1200s and first documented in 1377. It was a fortress, which is also claimed to have connections to the historical Dracula. Today it is a museum open the public.

The Palace of Parliament is located in Bucharest. It is a governmental building with multiple purposes. It is the world’s largest civilian building. It encompasses 3,700,000 square feet (340,000 sq m) through twelve floors. There are four additional functional levels underground.

Peles Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle located in the Carpathian Mountains. It was constructed during the years between 1873 and 1914. Although called a castle, it is the form of a palace. It encompasses 34,000 square feet (3,200 sq m) with 170 rooms.

The Communist State of Romania constructed Fagaras castle as a fortress and stronghold. It later served as a prison until the fall of communism. Today it has been restored and serves as a museum.

Izvorul Bigar, translated Bigar Spring, is more commonly known as Bigar Waterfall. The fanned out tiny shreds of water and coned shaped falls make it one of the most unique waterfalls in the world.

The Romanian Athenaeum is a renowned concert hall located in the heart of Bucharest. It opened in 1888 and the ornate domed structure serves as a landmark for the city. It will hold up to 794 people.

The rock sculpture of Decebalus is a 131 feet (40 m) carving of Decebalus. He was the last king of Dacia. It is the tallest rock sculpture in Europe.

The Iron Gates is a gorge located on the Danube River. A collection of gorges along the Danube, the Great Kazan is the most famous and narrowest part. The cliffs of the gorge reach a height of 1,640 feet (500 m).

Mausoleum of Marasesti, also called Mausoleum of Romanian Heroes, is a memorial containing 5,073 killed Romanian soldiers and officers from World War I. Construction was completed in 1938.

The Basarab Overpass or Basarab Bridge is located in Bucharest. It opened in June 2011. It spans 6,300 feet (1,920 m) and reaches a height of 142 feet (43.3 m).

The Heroes’ Cross is a monument constructed in 1928. It is located atop the summit at Caraiman Peak 7,516 feet (2,291 m). It is commonly called the Cross on Caraiman. It reaches a height of 92 feet (28 m), with the arms extending across 23 feet (7 m). It is the tallest summit cross in the world.
