Seven Wonders of Washington DC

The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States.  The famous house, home to every President since Adams in 1800, is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.  The six story house has 132 rooms, tennnis court, bowling alley, movie theater and putting green.

The Washington Monument is an obelisk honoring George Washington.  The monument is both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk, standing 555 feet 5 1/8 inches (169.3 m) tall.

The Jefferson Memorial is a presidential memorial honoring American Founding Father and third President Thomas Jefferson. Construction was completed in 1943 with the bronze statue being added in 1947.

The US Capitol Building is the official meeting place for the Congress of the United States, which is the legislature of the U.S. federal government.  It is found atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall.  There are five stories and the building encompasses 16.5 acres.

The National Air and Space Museum, a Smithsonian Institution, holds the largest collection of historical aircraft and spacecraft in the world.  It encompasses 161,145 square feet (14,970 sq km) of exhibition floor space.  It was established in 1946 with the primary building opening in 1976.

The National Museum of Natural Hisotry, a Smithsonian Institution, was the first Smithsonian building built in 1910.  It is the most visited natural history museum in the world and most visited museum of any type in North America.  Open 364 days a year with free admission.

The National WWII Memorial is a national memorial honoring the Americans who served either in the armed forces or as civilians during World War II.  It features 56 pillars, a pair of triumphal arches, and a fountain and opened to the public April 29, 2004.

The United States Botanic Gardens, also known as US Botanical Gardens, are located on the grounds of the US Capitol. Managed by Congress and the Architect of the Capitol, the USBG is open every day and is the oldest continually operating botanic gardens in the US.

The Lincoln Memorial is a national monument honoring President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.  Leveraging a Greek temple architecutural style, the monument was dedicated in 1922.

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defense.  It is a symbol of the US military with the Pentagon (five sides) representing the five arms of the military.  It encompasses 6,500,000 square feet and holds over 28,000 military personnel.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception honors the virgin Mary.  The shrine is the largest Catholic church in the United States, the largest church of any kind in the western hemisphere, and the eighth largest church building in the world.  It is the tallest habitable building in DC.

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is dedicated to the memory of the President and the era he represents.  It was dedicated by President Clinton on May 2, 1997 and encompasses 7.5 acres while tracing the 12 years of history during FDR's terms as President.
