Seven Wonders of Volcanoes

Mount Etna is an active stratvolcano located in Italy.  It reaches a summit of 10,991 feet (3,350 m).  It is the most active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world.

Kilauea is a shield volcano located on the Big Island of Hawaii.  It is considered the most active volcano in the world.  It reaches a summit of 4,091 feet (1,247 m).

Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano located in Italy.  It is part of the Campanian volcanic arc.  It reaches a summit of 4,203 feet (1,281 m).  It is most notable for the eruption in AD 79 that destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Mauna Loa is one of five volcanoes that form the Island of Hawaii. It reaches a summit of 7,080 feet (2,158 m).  Mauna Loa is the largest subaerial volcano in both mass and volume, and is traditionally considered the largeset volcano in the world.

Krakatoa, also called Krakatau, is a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.  It reaches a summit of 2,667 feet (813 m).  The explosion of the mountain is considered the loudest sound heard in modern history.

Santa Maria is an active volcano located in Guatemala.  It reaches a height of 12,375 feet (3,772 m).  The eruption in 1902 was one of the four largest eruptions of the 20th century and a top five eruption for the last 300 years.

Mount Merapi, also called Gunung Merapi, is an active stratovolcano located in Indonesia.  It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regulalry since 1548.

Mount Erebus is the second highest volcano in Antarctica and the southern most active volcano on earth.  It is the 6th highest mountain on the continent.  It reaches a summit of 12,448 feet (3,794 m).

Mayon Volcano is one of the most perfectly shaped volcanoes.  It is also known as Mount Mayon. It is located in the Philippines with the summit reaching a peak of 8,081 feet (2,463 m).  It is affectionately known as having the "perfect cone."

Popocatepetl is an active volcano located in Mexico.  The summit reaches a peak of 17,802 feet (5,425 m) making it the second highest peak in Mexico.  The name translates to "smoking moutain," but it is also called El Popo by locals.

Volcan de Fuego is an active stratovolcano in Guatemala.  It is renowned for the consistency of activity although often at a low level.  The volcano reaches a summit at 12,346 feet (3,763 m).

Tungurahua, which means "throat of fire," is an active stratovolcano located in Ecuador.  It is active with the last eruption occuring in February of 2014.  The summit reaches a peak of 16,408 feet (5,023 m).
