Seven Wonders of the Caribbean

Castillo San Felipe Del Morro, also known as Fort San Felipe del Morro or Morro Castle, is a 16th century citadel located in San Juan.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The fort or castle guards the entrance into San Juan Bay.

St. Nicholas Abbey is a plantation house located on the island of Barbados.  It is one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions found in the Western Hemisphere.  Construction was completed in 1660 and serves as a sugar plantation.

Basilica Higuey is more officially known as Basilica Catedral Nuestra Senora de la Altaracia.  It is a Roman Catholic basilica and cathedral found on the island of Dominica Republic.  It honors Our Lady of Altagracia, patroness of the nation.  Construction completed in 1970.

Maho Beach is not famous because of the nature, but rather the integration and location of the beach with the airport.  Airplanes fly right overheard as if landing on the beach as the approach the short runway of only 7,500 feet.  It is a close encounter of a different kind.

Atlantis Paradise Island is a resort waterpark located on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.  Although first opened as Trump Plaza, the name was changed to Atlantis when the Royal Towers were built.  It features a 200 million gallon 141 acre Aquaventure waterpark.

Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a well preserved fortress located on the island of St. Kitts.  It was constructed by African slaves and stands today as one of the best preserved historical fortifcations in the Caribbean and Americas.

The Sans-Souci Palace was the royal residence of King Henri I of Haiti.  It is the most significant of the 9 palaces built by the king.  Construction was completed in 1813.  THe Citadelle Laferriere is built nearby as a mountaintop fortress.

Fort Fincastle was constructed in 1793 overlooking the city of Nassau. It was built in the shape of a paddle steamer. It featured six different canons and was a lighthouse through 1817.

The Parliament Building, also called the Parliament House, was constructed in 1874. It is the meeting place of both chambers. It showcases neo-Gothic architectural style.

Havana Cathedral, more officially known as the Cathedral of The Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception, was constructed in the Plaza de la Catedral and serves as the center of Old Havana. It measures 34 by 35 square meters.

The Columbus Lighthouse is a monument honoring Christopher Columbus and the Christianization of America. The lighthouse showcases a beam of light, which forms a cross shape in the sky that is so bright it can be seen from Puerto Rico. It measures 680 feet (210 m) long.

The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park opened in May 2006. It is the world’s first underwater sculpture park, and it features a collection of ecological underwater art.

The Museum of the Revolution was originally constructed as the Presidential Palace. It became the Museum of the Revolution after the Cuban revolution. It features Neo-Classical architecture and was decorated by Tiffany & Co of New York, NY.

St. John’s Cathedral, also called St. John the Divine or the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba, is an Anglican church that is located at the top of the hill overlooking the area below. It holds up to 2,200 people.

The Monument of Santiago is locally known as Monumento a los Heroes de la Restauracion. It was constructed in 1944 and reaches a height of 219.8 feet (67 m). it recognizes or honors the centennial of the Dominican War of Independence from Haiti fought in 1844.
