Seven Wonders of Switzerland

Kapellbrucke, translated Chapel Bridge, is a covered wooden footbridge extending over the Reuss River. It is the oldest covered bridge in Europe and the oldest surviving truss bridge. It was built in 1333 and extends 558 feet (170 m).

Chateau de Chillon is an island castle located on Lake Geneva. The castle is comprised of 100 different independent buildings that were gradually connected together. The first record of the castle is dated in 1005.

Aarburg Castle is located on the steep rocky hillside overlooking Aarburg. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. It was originally built as a medieval castle to protect the narrow point on the Aare river.

The Brunswick Monument is a mausoleum located in Geneva. It was constructed to honor the life of Charles II, Duke of Brunswick from 1804 – 1873.

Oberhofen Castle is located in the municipality of Oberhofen near Bern. It is designated as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

The Federal Palace of Switzerland is the Swiss Parliament building. The Swiss Federal Assembly and Federal Council are housed in the facility. Construction was completed in 1902. The dome reaches a height of 209.9 feet (64 m).

The Castle of Gruyeres, also known as Chateau de Gruyeres, is found in the town of Gruyeres. It is designated as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. Construction was completed in 1282. It now serves as a museum.

The Valere Basilica, also known as the Valere Castle, is a fortified church located in Valais. It is designated as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

Basel Munster, originally a Catholic cathedral, is a Reformed Protestant church. It was built prior to 1500 featuring Romanesque and Gothic style architecture. The red sandstone church and towers make it one of the key landmarks in the region.

Motebello Castle was constructed prior to 1313 by the pro-Imperial Rusca family. It now houses the Archaeological and Civic Museum, which opened in 1974.

The Aletsch Glacier, also called Great Aletsch Glacier, is the largest glacier in the Alps. It extends approximately 14 miles (23 km) and covers more than 46 square miles (120 sq km). The thickest spot is projected at 3,300 feet (1 km). it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Lion Monument, also called Lion of Lucerne, is a sculpture carved into the side of the granite wall. It honors the Swiss guards who were killed in the French Revolution. Mark Twain called it, “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”
