Seven Wonders of Spain

This palace located in Granada, was originally built as a small fortress in 889. After receiving little attention, it was transformed in 1933 into a royal palace, initiated by the Sultan of Granada, Yusuf I. Its Islamic palaces were originally built for the Muslim emirs, until the Reconquista in 1492.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is an Islamic mosque that was converted to a Catholic Christian cathedral.  The Mezquita is considered to be one of Moorish architecture’s most accomplished monuments. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was divided between Muslims and Christians after the Visigothic conquest.

The Roman Theatre of Mérida was constructed in 16 to 15 BCE, in the Emerita Augusta, a Roman City. The theater has undergone renovations through the first century.  The theatre would hold up to 6,000 spectators.  Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1993.

The Cave of Altamira is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain because of its Upper Paleolithic cave paintings. These paintings contain drawings of wild mammals and human hands, including polychrome rock paintings. It was the first cave where the prehistoric cave paintings were actually found.

The Seville Cathedral of Andalusia, Spain was built in the 16th century for the city to show-off its wealth after the Reconquista. The cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral and the world’s third-largest cathedral.  It is best known as the burial place of Christopher Columbus. In 1987, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This basilica is the first church to be dedicated to Mary. The church was built in the 1st or 2nd century AD. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is located in Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain with its present building added between 1681 and 1872.

Timanfaya National Park is known locally as Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. The area was created between 1730 and 1736, where during this time, more than 100 volcanoes rose up and completely destroyed this part of the island. In 1968, it was then declared a national park and its name was changed.

The Caldera de Taburiente NP is located on the island of La Palma, in Canar It was pronounced a national park in 1954. Its highest point is the Roque de los Muchachos reaching a peak at 7,959 feet (2,426 m) along the northern wall.

The Teide NP is located around the Mount Teide, which is the highest mountain of Spain at 12,198 feet (3,718 m). In 1954, it was declared as a national park, which made it the country’s oldest and largest national park. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

This nature reserve located in the mountain range of Sierra del Trocal is popular because of its unusual landforms. It is recognised as a Natural Site of Interest and a Natural Park Reserve. Torcal de Antequera has four geological regions composed of the Sierra Pelada, Torcal Bajo, Takos and Laderas and Torcal Alto.

Palau Nacional is a palace that was built in 1929 in Barcelona. It currently serves as the National Art Museum of Catalonia. It expands over 32,000 square meters while exhibiting the Spanish Renaissance architecture. An elliptical dome sits in the center.
