Seven Wonders of Norway

Trolltunga, affectionately known as Tongue Rock, is a piece of granite rock hanging out horizontally out of the side of a mounain.  It is at a height of about 700 meters over the Hardanger Fjord.  The name translates to "The Troll's tongue."

Akershus Fortress, also known as Akershus Castle, was built to protect Oslo.  It is a medieval castle that has also been used as a prison.  Construction begain under King Kaakon V in the 1290s, replacing Tonsberg as one of the most important castles.

The Storting, also called "the great thing" or "the great council," is the supreme legislature of Norway.  It was established in 1814 by the Constitution of Norway and located in Oslo.

Aurora Borealis, also referred to as the Northern Lights, are natural displays of lights that appear in the sky in different shapes and forms.  They can appear as sheets, dancing waves or other shapes with the colors varying although green is the most common color.

Kannestein, is affectionately known as Stone Tail. It is a granite rock that has been beaten by the waves into the shape it is today. Many say that it looks like the tail of a whale going back into the sea, whereas others say it looks like a mushroom.

Borgund Stave Church is a stave church located in the village of Borgund. It is recognized as a triple nave stave church; Sogn-type.  It is the best preserved of the varying 28 stave churches throughout Norway.  It was constructed in the 12th century and now serves as a museum.

Preikestolen, also called Prekestolen, translates into English meaning "Preacher's Pulpit" or "Pulpit Rock."  Ut us a steeo and massive granite cliff reaching a height of 1,982 feet (604 m) above sea level.  The top is approximately 82 x 82 feet (25 x 25 m).

Briksdalsbreen, which translates Briksdal Glacier, is one of the most recognized and famous glaciers in Norway.  The glacier is found inside Jostedalsbreen National Park.  It terminates in Briksdalsbrevatnet, a small glacier lake, which is about 1,135 feet (346 m) above sea level.

Lofoten Islands, are an archipelago located in the county of Nordland. This archipelago features one of the world's larget elevated temperature anomalies in relation to its high altitude. The sea is rich with life and the world's largest deep water coral reef is in the area.

The Royal Palace was built in the first half of the 19th century as a residence for King Charles III.  It is also the official residence of the current  present monarch. The palace has 173 rooms.

Trondheim was founded in 997 as a trading post and the capitol of Norway during the Viking area.  It was also called Kaupangen, Nidaros, and Trondhjem.  It is the third most populous municipality in Norway, and the epitome of Norwegian architecture and culture.  The town lies on the shore of Trondheimsfjord at the mouth of the river Nidelva.
