Seven Wonders of Ireland

With around 1 million travelers annually, the Cliffs of Moher are Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations.  The cliffs reach a height of 702 feet (214 m) and are a candidate for the Seven Natural Wonders of Europe.  The cliffs are comprised mostly of shale and sandstone.

Established in 1920, Kylemore Abbey is a Benedictine monastery created by nuns who escaped Belgium during WW I. The castle extends across 40,000 square feet (3,700 sq m) with construction started in 1867.

The Dak Hedges, also known as Dark Hedges, is possibly the most mystifying road around the world. Beech trees planted by the Stuart family landscaped the road. Today it is one of the most photographed roads in the world.

Saint Patrick Cathedral, also referenced as the National Cathedral, originated in 1191. It is the largest church in the country featuring a 140-foot (43 m) spire. Approximately 300,00 travelers visit annually.

Christ Church Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, is located in Dublin and is the oldest of the medieval cathedrals. It features the biggest cathedral crypt 206 feet (63 m) in the United Kingdom.

The Giant’s Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage site that features 40,000 interconnected basalt columns that were created from a historical volcanic eruption. The highest column reaches a peak of 39 feet (12 m) with the surrounding solidified lava getting has thick as 92 feet (28 m).

Dublin Castle was built in 1204 under the commission of King John of England. IT features a throne room, Saint Patrick’s Hall, State Drawing Room, State Dining Room, a number of State Bedrooms and the impressive State Corridor.

Dunguaire Castle was built during the 16th century and features a tower house and defensive wall. The tower reaches a height of 75 feet (22.9 m).

Ashford Castle is a medieval castle that has been renovated and developed over the years. It now serves as a luxurious 5 star hotel. The original castle was constructed in 1228. The hotel features 83 rooms, 13 penthouse bedrooms, and 30 lodges spread across the grounds.

Belfast City Hall serves as the civic facilities for the Belfast City Council. It is located in Donegall Square and acts as the dividing point between commercial and business areas. Construction was completed in 1906 with the height of the building reaching a peak of 174 feet (53 m).

Samuel Beckett Bridge extends across the River Liffey connecting North Wall Quay to the Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. It is a cable-stayed bridge that expands across 394 feet (120 m) and reaches a height of 157 feet (48 m).

Blackrock Castle is a 16th century castle. It is located on the banks of the River Lee outside Cork city. Originally built as a defensive stance for the harbor, the castle now serves as a tourist spot featuring an observatory and restaurant.

Constructed as a neoclassical 18th century facility, the Custom House serves as the Department of the Environment and other community and local government agencies. It is located on the north bank of the Liffey River.

Belfast Castle was constructed at 400 feet (120 m) above sea level delivering a clear view of the city of Belfast. It was constructed during the 12th century. Today the castle is a popular tourist attraction and venue for wedding receptions and dining events.

Titanic Belfast serves as a tourist destination as well as a monument to the maritime heritage. It records the history of the famous Titanic. The attraction expands across 130,000 square feet (12,000 sq m). It opened in March 0f 2012. It reaches a height of 126 feet (38.5 m).

As a Church of Ireland cathedral, Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral was the original work of the Victorian architect William Burges. It is now one of three cathedrals. It features early French architectural style with construction completed in 1870.
