Seven Wonders of Greece

The Acropolis of Athens is a prehistoric fortress, which is located above the city of Athens. The Acropolis contains the remains of a couple of ancient buildings, with the most famous one among these ancient buildings being Parthenon.  Acropolis literally means the "upper city."

The Samariá Gorge is a World's Biosphere Reserve and a national park  It is located on the island of Crete.  The Gorge is 9.9 miles (16km) long and has an height of 4,101 feet (1,250 m). Samariá Gorge was made by a small river the runs between Mt. Volakias and the White Mountains.

The Myrtos Beach is known to be one of Greece’s most dramatic beaches featuring a long arc of white pebbles.  Myrtos Beach is considered spectacular because of its surrounding sediment made up of metamorphosed limestone and marble. The beach can be found between the mountains of Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros.

The Delphi Theatre was built in the 4th BC and features 35 rows with a capacity of 5,000. It is located uphill from the Temple of Apollo, designed to give the spectators a view of the valley and the whole sanctuary. The theater is made from materials ranging from wood, to local Parnassus Limestone.

The name Meteora came from the terms middle of the sky, in the heavens above or suspended in the air. This was the name given because Meteora’s elevation peaking at 1,027 feet (313 m). Meteora is the second largest complex of the Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site  under five criteria: I, II, IV, V and VII.

The Cape Sounion is a mass of land believed to be the remains of the Temple of Poseidon. This site is most popular among tourists during its sunset. History shows that the Temple of Poseidon was destroyed by the Persian Troops in 480BC. The temple was then rebuilt in 440BC, during the time of Pericles.

The Epidaurus used to be a small city in ancient Greece. It was believed to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son and was known for its theater, which is still being used today. The theater is still being used today for their ceremonial Hestiatoreion or the banqueting hall, for baths and dramatic eprformances. The theater originally had 34 rows, but was extended to 55 rows in Roman times.

Knossos is an archaeological site considered to be the oldest city of Europe. The Palace of Knossos was built gradually between 1700 and 1400 BC. The palace’s layout contains 1,300 rooms that are connected with corridors. The palace has a total of six acres and includes a theater, extensive storerooms and main entrances on each of the four cardinal caves.

The St. Paul Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery located on the Chalkidiki peninsula.  It is also referred to as Agiou Pavlou.  Restored between 1355 and 1365, the monestary houses 31 working monks and stores over 12,000 books and over 490 manuscripts.  The monestary is dedicated to the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.

Mycenae is a famous archaeological site in Greece that is 90km southwest of Greece. Mycenae used to be one of the major military centers of the Greek civilization. The Mycenae features a Citadel whose length measures 3.625 feet (1,105 m).
