Seven Wonders of Egypt

The Great Sphinx is one of the world’s oldest and largest monuments. The Great Sphinx is the largest monolith statue in the world. Locals believe that the Sphinx was built by the Pharaoh Khafre, who was also believed to have built Giza’s second pyramid, sometime in the 2500 BC.

The Luxor Temple was built for the Theban Triad of Amun-re and his family: Mut, his wife and Khonsu, his son. The complex is situated on Nile River’s east bank. The Temple of Luxor is the center of the many festivals with the festival of Opet being the most important festivals.

Abu Simbel is composed of two temples built from two massive rocks. These rocks were originally taken out and carved out of the mountainside. This was done during the time of Pharaoh Ramesses II way back in the 13th BC. The Abu Simbel was built to serve as a monument to the Pharaoh and Nefertari, his Queen.

The Saqqara or the Sakkara is one of Egypt’s ancient burial grounds. The world’s oldest standing step pyramid can also be found in Sakkara. This burial site served as a venue for cult ceremonies and minor burials for about 3,000 years, but it was also a Giza royalty burial ground.

The Temple of Karnak is the world’s largest ancient religious site and is also an open-air museum. The Karnak Temple is Egypt’s second most visited historical site, with the Giza Pyramids being the first. The temple has four main parts. The largest of those four is the Precinct of Amon-Re.

Temple of Hatshepsut is located below Deir el Bahari’s cliffs, which is found on Nile’s west bank. Senemut, the royal architect of Hatshepsut, designed and implemented the temple. It was originally built to honor Amun’s glory and for posthumous worship as well. Hatshepsut’s Temple is composed of terraces that are three layers that reach up to 97 feet (30 m).

The Bent Pyramid was the second pyramid that Pharaoh Sneferu’s built. The Bent Pyramid can be found at Dahshur. What makes the Bent Pyramid a wonder is the way it rises from the desert at a 55-degree angle, and then quickly changes to 43 degrees.

The Step Pyramid of Djoser was the ancient Egyptians’ first pyramid built. Constructed during the 27th BC, the pyramid was intended to be used for Pharaoh Djoser’s burial. Originally built with a traditional design featuring a mastaba that was flat-roofed, the plan was altered adding six steps, to the top measuring 204 feet (62 m) high.

This valley in Egypt contains tombs originally built for the kings and privileged nobles. It was constructed between 16th to 11th BC. The Valley of the Kings features 63 tombs and compartments that had sizes ranging from simple to complex tombs that have more than 120 chambers.

The Red Sea Reef is the largest coral reef along any of Africa's coastline. There are over 1,100 species of aquatic life and over 10% are indigenous to the area.
