Seven Wonders of Armenia

Mount Ararat is renowned as the resting place for Noah’s ark.  It is a snow-capped dormant volcanic cone that reaches a height of 16,854 feet (5,137 m).

Tatev Monastery was constructed in the 9th century built on the edge of the gorge looking over the Borotan River. The world’s longest non-stop cable car provides access to this wonder candidate.

The Republic Square is a large town square in the town of Yerevan. The National Gallery, History Museum and many governmental buildings are located on the square.

Noravank Monastery is a 13th century monastery found outside Yerevan near the Amaghu River. It is also known as Noravank at Amaghu with one of the highlights being the Surp Astvatsatsin church.

Zvartnots Cathedral is a 7th century cathedral that features tetraconch architecture. Construction was completed in 652. The name means “celestial angels.”

Goshavank Monastery is a 12th century monastery found in Gosh. It represents one of the world’s best examples of khachkar. It is not a functional monastery at this time, but serves as a common tourist attraction.

Saint Gregory Cathedral, more fully known as Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, is the largest Armenian church in the world. It is considered one of the largest religious buildings.

The ancient Temple of Garni is a 1st century Hellenic temple. It is the only pagan and only Greco-Roman colonnaded building.

Etchmiadzin Cathedral, more fully known as Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, was the first cathedral built in the country. It is considered the oldest cathedral in the world and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tsitsernakaberd is a memorial recognized the horrific Armenian genocide. It was constructed in 1967. The 12 slabs represent the 12 lost provinces.

The monastery of Geghard, which was partially constructed out of the neighboring cliff or mountainside, features unusual architectural design. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site constructed in 1215.

Yerevan Opera Theatre is more fully known as the Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. It opened in 1933 and it features two concert halls.
