Seven Wonders of Indonesia

The Torajaland is the home of the Toraja ethnic group. The homes of the Toraja people are actually called the Tongkonan. These are traditional and ancestral houses that have a unique boat-like shape. People have referred to these designs as oversized saddleback roofs as well.

Volcanic island is located in the Sunda Strait, which is in between Sumatra and Java islands. Krakatoa has an elevation of 2,667 feet (813 m). This volcano is popular for its catastrophic eruption in 1883 that caused huge tsunamis, which ended up killing 36,000 people. Krakatoa grows at around 13 centimeters a week.

TDanau Toba is classified as a super volcano, and is a lake as well. Its lake is 18.6 miles (30 km) wide and 62 miles (100 km) long, with its deepest point at 1,656 feet (505 m). Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake in the world, and holds the title for being the largest lake in Indonesia.

Mount Bromo is the most well known peak of the Massif. Mount Bromo is currently an active volcano and stands at 2,349 feet (716 m) high. The volcano is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and is one of the most visited tourist spots in Indonesia.

The Borobudur is one of the most popular Buddhist temples in the world. The temple was believed to have been built between the 8th and 9th centuries, which lasted for more than 75 years. For centuries, the Borobudur was hidden under volcanic ash layers, buried in the jungle. The Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple.

The Pura Besakih is considered the Mother Temple and is called the holiest of all the temples in Bali. Pura Besakih is actually a temple composed of 23 separate temples. Some of these temples can be traced back to as far as the 10th century. The mother temple’s main axis aligns with Gunung Agung’s peak.

The Tirta Empul is fed by a sacred spring, which produces holy water used by priests and ordinary Balinese for bathing. The Balinese believe that a dip in the spring will give good health and fortune as well. History shows that the Tirta Empul was built in 926AD.

Goa Gajah is known as the Elephant Cave getting the nickname from how closely located it is to the Elephant River. Goa Gajah is famous for its entrance, as it was carved to look like a face with its mouth being the entrance. Inside the cave, you will find a statue of Ganesha, the Hindu god.

The Pura Taman Ayun is one of the most beautiful royal public temples. This royal public temple was built by the King of Mengwi in the 1600s, and is in fact still being sponsored by his descendants today.  The temple is surrounded by moat, which is why it gives the illusion that the temple is floating on water.

The Pura Luhur Lempuyang is considered to be one of the most important religious places in Bali. This temple is one of the six sad kahyangan or the temples of the world, which is said to be dedicated to the supreme God or Sang Hyang Widi Wasa.

Gunung Agung is a stratovolcano mountain. It is the highest point on the island and reaches a peak of 9,944 feet (3,031 m). Although it last erupted in 1963, it is still recognized as an active volcano bellowing smoke at various times.

Puncak Jaya, also known as Carstensz Pyramid, is the highest point on Mount Carstensz reaching a height of 16,024 feet (4,884m). It is the highest island peak in the world.

Candi Prambanan, also called Candi Rara Jonggrang, is a Hindu temple from the 9th century. It is dedicated to Brahma, God as the Creator. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Komodo Island is one of 17,508 country islands. It is the basis for the Komodo dragon name, which is the world's largest lizard.
